Why Hedges Are Essential for Canberra Gardens
“The beauty and utility of hedges go well beyond their appearance. They also play an important environmental role, supporting local wildlife, encouraging biodiversity and creating cooler, greener spaces in Canberra's increasingly developed suburbs.”
I love hedges. Even though I trim them every day, I never get sick of them. At their most formal, they serve as finely sculpted, living structures, while at their most neglected and scruffiest, they still offer wild and colourful shelter for birds and other wildlife.
Think of your garden as your artwork. Your hedge is a frame around that artwork. A living, breathing, colourful frame which provides stunning visual impact, creating a sense of grandeur and prestige in even the smallest, most modest gardens, while also offering significant privacy and security to your outdoor space.
The beauty and utility of hedges go well beyond their appearance. They also play an important environmental role, supporting local wildlife, encouraging biodiversity and creating cooler, greener spaces in our increasingly developed suburbs. In this article, I want to explore why I believe hedges are among the most valuable features of any garden, and why Canberra could benefit from having a whole lot more of them.
STRUCTURE & PRIVACY
On a structural level, I love how a hedge can provide privacy to a garden. In my garden, I have approximately seven-metre-tall hedges which line the entire backyard fence line. The dense foliage has created a stunning, peaceful and private garden that feels like ‘our own’. The neighbours can be hosting the rowdiest barbecues, and still our garden feels like a sanctuary, softening noise and obstructing any view of our garden that neighbours might otherwise have.
After a long day of work, nothing beats disappearing into my garden with a tea or a beer to sit in what has become a completely private green sanctuary. And, although it’s not a guaranteed standalone deterrent, alongside a strong fence line, a tall hedge can provide added security to a property by putting a thick, dense wall of greenery and branches between your property and the outside world.
VISUAL IMPACT
Visually, a hedge can provide magnificent visual impact to a garden by enhancing the sense of proportion in even the smallest gardens. A tall hedge can create the illusion of a much larger space and make a lawn area seem significantly larger than it actually is. On the other hand, a short, compact hedge has its place in a garden as a lush border between sections or as visual structure along garden pathways, helping create a welcome snugness.
However, when not carefully planned, a small hedge can diminish the sense of proportion in even large garden spaces. A hedge also provides a variety of colours which can enhance the vibrancy of an outdoor space. From the ruby reds and greens of Photinia to the deeper greens and white blossoms of Viburnum or purple flowers of lilac, hedges don’t need to be boring walls of monotone greenery. Even the greenest of hedges, like hornbeam, beech or pittosporum, all have unique textured foliage which can make an otherwise boring fence line or property boundary pop with more character.
MICROCLIMATES & ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
One of the most important benefits of a hedge is its ability to create microclimates by providing robust shelter from strong winds and other elements. I have sat in our backyard during some of the most violent storms. While surrounding gardens seem to be getting battered, our garden remains relatively at ease thanks to its shelter.
More importantly, the added shade and cooling effect created by our hedge has provided lush, forest-like microclimates in certain areas of the yard where numerous woodland plants and other flowering shrubs would otherwise struggle to survive through the harsh Canberra summers.
WHY CANBERRA NEEDS MORE HEDGES!
With the rising popularity of minimalist outdoor design, concrete-filled courtyards and heavily paved gardens, lush greenery seems to be gradually disappearing from modern Australian suburban landscapes. While these contemporary designs offer low-maintenance appeal, they often come at the expense of the natural beauty and environmental benefits that living gardens provide.
In a city like Canberra, where scorching summers and increasingly developed suburban landscapes place considerable pressure on our urban environment, the case for incorporating dense, thoughtfully planned hedges into our gardens has arguably never been stronger.
Hedges can help moderate local temperatures, reduce exposure to harsh winds, provide valuable habitat and nesting opportunities for birds and other wildlife, and, when flowering varieties are selected, offer important food sources for bees and other pollinators. In an increasingly built-up suburban environment, these green corridors can play a big role in supporting biodiversity and creating cooler, healthier and more inviting outdoor spaces.
In essence, a hedge is a no-brainer – it lifts the appeal and aesthetics of your garden while positively impacting our local environment.
